Focal length and the full-frame equivalent

The focal length, in millimetres, sets how much of the scene a lens takes in: short focal lengths are wide, long ones zoom in. The same number looks different on different cameras, because smaller sensors crop the view, so phones and compacts have tiny focal lengths such as 6 mm.

The 35 mm equivalent converts any camera's focal length to full-frame terms, so you can compare a phone, a compact and a DSLR on the same scale. It's what photographers mean when they say "shot at 85 mm".

Questions and answers

How do I find the focal length of a photo?

Drop the photo into the box above. You'll see the focal length in millimetres and, when the camera records it, the full-frame equivalent and the angle of view.

What does "35 mm equivalent" mean?

The focal length that would give the same view on a full-frame (35 mm film-sized) camera. A 4 mm phone lens is about 26 mm in those terms, a standard wide angle.

What is a crop factor?

How much smaller a sensor is than full frame. Multiply the focal length by it to get the equivalent: on a 1.5× crop camera, 50 mm looks like 75 mm.

Which focal length is best for portraits?

Many photographers like 85 to 135 mm in full-frame terms: it flatters faces and blurs the background. Check a few portraits you like to see what they used.

Why does my phone photo say 6 mm?

Phone sensors are tiny, so their lenses have very short focal lengths. The full-frame equivalent, usually 13 to 120 mm depending on which camera you used, is the number to compare.
