What the f-number means
The aperture is the opening inside the lens that lets light in, written as an f-number such as ƒ/2.8. Smaller numbers mean a wider opening: more light, and a shallower slice of the scene in focus, which is what blurs the background.
Larger numbers, such as ƒ/8 or ƒ/11, keep more of the scene sharp from front to back. Knowing the aperture of a photo you like tells you how to get the same look with your own camera.

Questions and answers
How do I find the aperture of a photo?
Drop the photo into the box above. You'll see the f-number it was taken at, the widest the lens could open, and the ISO and shutter speed.
Which aperture gives a blurry background?
A wide one, such as ƒ/1.4 to ƒ/2.8, especially with a longer lens and the subject close to you and far from the background.
Is a lower f-number better?
Not always. Wide apertures let in more light and blur the background, but less of the scene is sharp. Landscapes and group photos often look best at ƒ/8 to ƒ/11.
What does the lens's widest aperture mean?
The largest opening the lens can use, such as ƒ/1.8 on a "50 mm ƒ/1.8" lens. If the photo was taken there, the lens was wide open.
Why does my phone photo show ƒ/1.8 but little blur?
Phone sensors are tiny, so even a wide aperture keeps most of the scene in focus. Portrait mode adds blur with software instead.
