What a picture style does
Every camera turns the sensor's raw data into a JPEG using a colour look: how contrasty, how saturated, how sharp. Each brand has its own name for it, such as Canon's Picture Styles, Nikon's Picture Controls and Sony's Creative Styles.
The camera writes the look into the photo. Knowing it explains why two cameras' JPEGs look different, and helps you match a look you like, or pick a flat one when you plan to edit.

Questions and answers
How do I find which picture style a photo used?
Drop the original photo into the box above. You'll see the style under the brand's own name, with the contrast, saturation and sharpness changes when the camera recorded them.
What does "User Def." mean on a Canon?
It's a custom slot the photographer set up. We show the built-in style it was based on, such as Portrait or Faithful.
Which style is best for editing later?
A flat one, such as Neutral, Faithful or Flat, keeps the most detail in shadows and highlights. In RAW files the style doesn't limit your editing at all.
Does it work with Fujifilm film simulations?
Fujifilm's film simulations are covered by our Fujifilm Recipe Finder, which shows the full recipe including grain and colour settings.
Why does it say nothing for my phone photo?
Phones don't use picture styles in the same way. iPhones record their Photographic Style differently, and most Android phones record none.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
