The sound inside a video file

A video file carries its sound as a separate track, encoded with an audio codec such as AAC, Opus or Dolby Digital. The track records how many channels it has (mono, stereo, 5.1), its sample rate and, for lossless sound, its bit depth.

It explains why a video has no sound on a TV or in an editor (an unsupported codec), whether a film has surround sound, and which languages an MKV file includes.

Questions and answers

How do I check the audio format of a video?

Drop the video into the box above. You'll see the audio codec, the channels and the sample rate in a few seconds.

Why does my video have no sound on my TV?

The TV may not support its audio codec, such as DTS or Opus, even if it plays the picture. Check the codec here, then convert the audio to AAC if needed.

Is my video in surround sound?

If it shows 5.1 or 7.1, yes. Stereo means two channels, mono one.

How do I see all the audio languages in a film?

For MKV files we list every audio track with its language. Our MKV Track Viewer also shows the subtitle tracks.

What sample rate is normal for video?

48 kHz is standard for video; 44.1 kHz comes from music and some phones. Both sound the same to most people.

What happens to my file?

Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
