What's inside an MKV file
MKV (Matroska) is a container that can hold one video track, many audio tracks and many subtitle tracks, each with its own language and name. Films often carry the original audio, a dubbed version and subtitles in several languages.
Each track can be marked as the default, which plays automatically, or forced, for subtitles shown only when characters speak another language. This tool lists them all before you start watching or editing.

How do I see the audio and subtitle tracks in an MKV?

What does a "forced" subtitle mean?
It's shown even when subtitles are off, usually to translate lines in another language or on-screen text.
Why does the wrong language play by default?
The file marks one audio track as the default. Change it in your player, or remux the file with MKVToolNix to make another track the default.
Does it work for WebM files?
Yes. WebM is a form of Matroska, so its tracks are listed the same way.
Is there a size limit?
Large films can take a while to upload. The tracks are listed as soon as the file is read.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
