How a document names its app
Word, Excel and PowerPoint write the app's name and internal version into every file they save: version 16 means Office 2016 or later, including Microsoft 365. LibreOffice and other OpenDocument apps write a "generator" line with their exact version.
It explains layout differences between computers, shows whether a file came from a company's Office or a free alternative, and helps support teams reproduce a problem.

Questions and answers
How do I find which version of Word made a document?
Drop it into the box above. We show the app and its version, and translate Office's internal numbers into releases such as Office 2016.
What does AppVersion 16.0000 mean?
Office 2016 or a later release, including Office 2019, 2021, 2024 and Microsoft 365, which all share version 16.
Does it show the last app or the first?
The last one that saved the file. Each save replaces the app name.
Can it tell Google Docs exports?
Google Docs exports often leave out the app name, so the result may say nothing was found, which is itself a hint.
Does it work with old .doc and .xls files?
Yes. The older formats store the app name too.
What happens to my file?
Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read on our servers and deleted automatically after about 24 hours. The answer is kept on a page with its own link, so you can share it. Tool result pages are never listed in search engines.
